immagine reg lazio tuscia tevere2

The upper Lazio's region including part of Viterbo and Rome Provinces is named "Tuscia", the term derives from the Latin plural tusci of tuscus/etruscus; the Tuscia is therefore the Etruscan civilization cradle. In these lands landscape is shaped by the forms of an ancient and very extensive volcanic activity, now extinguished: volcanic mountains, caldera lakes, thermal areas, plateaus built by the tufa and engraved by watercourses in countless canyons, or gorges. The plains, where today a flourishing and industrialized agriculture occures, alternate with the steep and wild woody gorges slopes, with tufa vertical cliffs, riddled everywhere by the chisel of the Etruscan civilization first, Roman and medieval later: caves, tombs, shelters, houses and rocky sanctuaries are found everywhere, witnesses of a troglodyte culture from which we have drawn our survival rules up to "yesterday". A hypogeal world complementary to that, external and luminous, of the beautiful tufa villages, perched on the edge of the gorges ravines. A land, the Tuscia, full of mystery and suggestion.

immagine reg lazio sabina tevere

Legendary and archaic homeland of the Sabines and "Mother of Rome", amongst the rivers Tiber, Aniene and Nera, the latest in Umbria. A land of hills famous for its precious extra virgin olive oil with a bright green color and a fruity flavor, which the Greek / Roman physician Galeno used to define: "the best of the known world". Sabina has been a specialized olive oil production area since the Republican era and and kept this vocation even after the Empire fall thanks to the Farfa Abbey which represented the main productive rebirth flywheel of the rural territory exhausted by wars and infighting, and that today is the very symbol of medieval Sabina. Sabina is scattered with natural monuments, and signs of the past civilizations and of the rural memory, thanks to a slow transformation towards modernity, which has saved much of its heritage of culture and memory.

io guidando2

My name is Lucio graziano, I was Born in 1970, I'm a licenced Environmental Guide since 2009. I worked for 14 years in the environmental sector, as a consultant I was engaged in European projects and policies, promoting nature, landscape and biodiversity protection...gruppo

Now as a tour leader I think I'm doing more or less the same job, but instead of doing it on paper, I do it directly with my hikes' guests. My desire is to share my love for nature and the landscape, pointing out how they have been shaped in time and how man have been affecting them.

My job is to design tours in significant nature and landscape spots, study on field and on literature the areas's highlights: the geology, botany, archaeology, history, traditions, etc. and make a synthesis of the most interesting informations to tell, keeping just the ones that are related to the visible landscape.

sabina 6In 2014 I've changed life, moving from a large northern Italy's city, Turin, to a village of the Reti's province: Magliano Sabina, 70km northward Rome. Me and my girlfriend Giulia, have started a self-production farming activity: we grow wheat, spelt, legumes, vegetables, olive and fruit trees, so that we can personally experiment our way to make a landscape!io e picetina

We have many cats and two dogs: two marvellous white sheep dogs: "Lana" and "Bianca" that protect our crops from wildboars!

We both have the passion for music and music is often an additional ingredient in hiking events, we are interested in the popular music, something that comes from the deep rural culture as well as the food

piccettina suona, the religious habits and the agricoltural practises! There is a connection between all the things we do and we love this. io lana

Someone said: "a naturalist is a nature's curious one" and must be capable to interpret nature's signs.

I choosed this life for nature love and passion and for conveying the emotion of hidden corners and lovely landscapes discovering, here in my place: the Roman Countryside, and Rome.

The Eternal City certainly needs no introduction but certainly not many of you would bet that it is possible to enjoy its beauties by bicycle! On the contrary, this is possible by knowing well the routes to take and especially those to avoid !!
Once you have avoided the heavy traffic and taken those "secret passages" that connect neighborhoods, parks, cycle paths, etc. the unique experience of the city is guaranteed. The possibility of using e-bikes eliminates the last psychological obstacle: the fear of climbs and descents to and from the hills. Here are some proposals for urban landscape reading excursions, a wonderful experience to get in touch with the "spirit" of the Eternal City; to learn about the context and get a geografical overview thet gives you fundamental informations on the city's districts and on many highlights and that is also useful to set priorities in your sightseeing schedule

Immersions into landscape (I. i. L.) is an excursions, or rather, "incursions" program, in the rural territory, strictly on foot or by bicycle, suitable for those who are curious of observing and understanding the landscape in which they live or in which they spend holidays and want to share with new friends this experience turning it into an opportunity to meet, dialogue and having fun.

I. i. L. is a rural experience that is not limited exclusively to wine & food, it includes learning about plants and animals, agricultural systems, old varieties of cultivated plants, local sayings, beliefs and popular imagination, little minor architectural monuments and ancient building techniques , past societies that shaped landscape and landscape evolution to date, and much more ...

The I. i. L. excursions have the precise aim to let the participants deeply enter into local culture and to imprint in their hearts the visited places, and to possibly be able to make comparisons with their territories of origin.

Infact, we all share deep rural roots, and through the landscape storytellling , you'll be able to aknowledge it. As Tolstoy said: "If you describe well your village, you will talk to the whole world".

• The trips are by bike (MTB) or on foot. The tours introduced in this site are an example of what you can do, but trips can be tailored according to your needs and preferences as well, so, you can suggest other departure dates and combine destinations and activities according to your needs. CONTACT ME for your private tour!

• The sporting performance is NOT important, you will walk/ride on roads and trails for hikers, the most important thing is just that you get to the final destination "enriched".

• Anyway the paths are not always very easy, sometimes you need a bit of training, otherwise you are not having fun and you risk getting hurt, you should be sure to be well aware of the paths difficulty levels before booking. Nevertheless that bit of effort and challenge often is also the ingredient that makes the trip unique and rich in satisfaction.

• The excursions are not too many kilometers long, and include some stops every now and then for talking about the landscape that can be seen (day trips are on average 15 -45 km, by mountain bike, and 6 -10 km when walking).

• excursions are interactive therefore who wants to intervene by bringing his own experience is welcome. The atmosphere is relaxed, informal and non-academic.

... And after a long walk on the traces of past civilizations, from hidden paths, over open fields, on rocks and water :-) ... here's to us a lovely oasis of well-deserved rest in the shade of centuries-old olive trees (which tell stories and vicissitudes, from time immemorial) ... then, reassured, we put ourselves in new journey ... a new exploration of the Heart Sabino, along with our untiring Guide Lucio Graziano ....

An itinerary carefully studied, imagination and skill. And I am surprised to learn about the many aspects of an area that I thought familiar. Thanks Lucio, the next one!
