Corchiano (VT) is a small medieval village in the heart of Tuscia falisca, built on a tuff cliff bounded by the gorges of two rivers, according to a common settlement pattern in this area
Corchiano Gorges is now a natural monument, since, in addition to biodiversity treasures related to shady environments typical of the gorges ecosystems, it condenses into an extension of a few kilometers, archaeological and landscape permanences that allow us to tell the whole evolution of human settlements in these areas, from the falisci period until the last century. In this stoytelling the surrounding rolling plains, bounded by the ravines, are also included. Men's signs here recall us technological solutions for the agricultural use of the territory, that played an essential role in managing the relations between the ravine and the plateau: the hydraulic works for the realization of the "prata", the underground tunnels for the water drainage, the works of gorges barriage to gain new farmland, etc. This is the civilization of tuff, born on the characteristics of malleability of this rock, deposited from 400,000 years ago as part of the Vico volcano activity, on which man 's hand could easily model, either by digging or by edifying, forms and signs of a presence perfectly integrated in the typical views of this beautiful rural landscape.
